Approach boundary

The NFPA 703® recognizes three arc flash boundary levels: the limited approach boundary, the restricted area, and the prohibited area boundary.

What is prohibited approach boundary?

Prohibited Approach (inner boundary): A distance from an exposed part which is considered the same as making contact with the live part. This distance is not common between equipment. Some equipment will have a greater flash protection boundary while other equipment will have a lesser boundary.

What is a minimum approach boundary?

The limited approach boundary is the minimum distance from the energized item where unqualified personnel may safely stand. No untrained personnel may approach any closer to the energized item than this boundary.

What is required to enter a restricted approach boundary?

To cross over the restricted approach boundary, workers must have completed necessary training qualifications, must have a written plan for work in the area that has been approved by management, and must be wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).

What is the arc flash boundary for 480v?

The earlier mentioned voltages of 208, 220, 240, 277, 380, and 480 volts AC have a restricted boundary of 12 inches.

Who can cross the restricted approach boundary?

In addition to requiring safety training for all Qualified Persons, the Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace (NFPA 70E) also states that only Qualified Persons can cross the Restricted Approach Boundary into the area where the risk for electrical shock or electrocution is highest.

How far is the limited approach boundary?

Limited Approach Boundary – The Limited Approach Boundary (LAB) is identified as the “distance from an exposed energized electrical conductor or circuit part within which a shock hazard exists”. Best practice if for any unqualified person to stay 42” (3' 6”) or more away from the hazard.

When can an unqualified person cross a limited approach boundary?

(3) Entering the Limited Approach Boundary. Where there is a need for an unqualified person(s) to cross the limited approach boundary, a qualified person shall advise the unqualified person(s) of the possible hazards and continuously escort the unqualified person(s) while inside the limited approach boundary.

What is boundary limitation?

Boundary Limits means the boundary limits of the Municipality as they exist from time to time and that determine the area over which the Municipality has control and authority; Sample 1Sample 2Sample 3.

What is safe approach distance?

The 'safe approach distance' is the amount of space required to be kept between machinery and anything held by a person and the powerlines in order to prevent electricity arcing to you.

What is OSHA minimum approach distance?

As specified in Table R-6 of 1910.269 for phase to phase nominal voltages of 46.1 to 72.5 kilovolts, the minimum approach distance when phase to ground exposure is the concern is 3 feet (0.9 m) which is the clearance between the blade side on the bottom and the jaw at the top of the switch.

What is the minimum approach distance for service lines?

Scenario 1: Your utility has established, as a written rule, a minimum approach distance of 4 feet, 0 inches for employee exposure to energized parts on a 25 kV system, regardless of whether that exposure is phase to ground or phase to phase.

What is the difference between limited approach boundary and restricted approach boundary?

Limited approach boundary A person crossing this line must be qualified to do the job/task. They must wear flash protective equipment. Unqualified workers are prohibited from crossing this boundary. Restricted approach boundary A person crossing this line enters into restricted space.

What is the main purpose of the limited approach boundary for arc flash boundary?

The Arc Flash Boundary has been developed by NFPA70e to minimize the risk of arc flash injury to electrical workers, working in proximity to energized electrical equipment. The Arc Flash Boundary determines the distance from the equipment at which the Incident Energy of an arc flash would be 1.2 cal/cm².

What is restricted approach boundary defined as in CSA z462?

The Restricted approach boundary is the distance between the source and the worker under which he or she must wear PPE against electric shock. At this distance, it is possible that the worker will also have to wear Arc Flash PPE.

What is the minimum arc flash boundary?

The arc flash boundary is calculated to 1.2 calories/cm2 of incident energy. That's the distance where a worker without appropriate PPE would receive second-degree burns.

What is the restricted approach boundary for a 480 volt system?

The limited approach boundary is a distance from the employee to an exposed energized circuit part within which a shock hazard exists. The common nominal AC voltages that a maintenance person would be working on of 120, 208, 220, 240, 277, 380, and 480 all have a limited approach boundary of 42 inches.

How do you calculate arc flash boundary?

Arc Flash Boundary

  1. Example.
  2. Step 1: Enter the distance exponent X and incident energy EB at the AFB in terms of J/cm2.
  3. Step 2: Enter the previously provided arcing time of 0.05 seconds. ...
  4. Step 3: Multiply the normalized incident energy by 4.184 to convert from cal/cm2 to J/cm2. ...
  5. Step 4: Multiply answers from 1–3.

What causes arc blast?

It can result from accidental contact with the electrical systems, the buildup of conductive dusts, corrosion, dropped tools, or improper work procedures. The plasma arc has a virtually unlimited current carrying capacity once it's established. The energy of an arc flash converts primarily to heat and light.

Do I need an arc flash study?

Arc-Flash Hazard Assessments are required by OSHA and NFPA 70E as a part of an Electrical Hazard Assessment. Arc-Flash Assessments are a serious life safety issue and essential part of a safe and comprehensive electrical safety program.
